Christmas
We have a range of fun, festive art projects that use many different art techniques such as drawing, printmaking, collage and painting.
Inspire your students to create masterful artworks and learn new skills along the way this Christmas with our cheery art projects depicting Father Christmas, Christmas trees, angels, reindeer, gnomes, gingerbread houses and even an adorable Christmas koala painting.
Within the K-2 category, students will create a jovial collage artwork of Father Christmas, using coloured paper, acrylic paint, and chalk pastels, that is sure to look amazing on any living room mantle. Next, young artists will learn a printmaking technique with acrylic paint to create a fun, highly textured Christmas tree collage artwork complete with baubles, a decorative star, and glitter.
Students will learn about famous Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, and be inspired by his “tree of life” artwork to create their very own Klimt-style Christmas tree. Lastly, students will use craft and collage skills to create a serene stained-glass angel project using cellophane sheets that can be hung in the window to reflect rainbow lights around any classroom. This unit will expand students’ knowledge of colour, including different colour palettes and their effects on the viewer. Students will have the opportunity to explore with texture in artworks, as well as honing their compositional skills through the collage projects.
In the year 3-4 category, students will have the opportunity to complete an acrylic painting of an adorable Koala Bear, complete with a stocking cap just in time for the festive season. They will then create an enchanting 3D Christmas gnome artwork using collage, painting, and drawing techniques. Finally, students will conclude the unit with an endearing artwork of a Christmas Reindeer, adding bells and a scarf to their works to prepare their reindeers for the busiest night of the year. “
These lessons will expand students’ sketching and drawing abilities, teaching them how to create a representational image from a reference by starting with basic shapes and then refining and adding details. Students will focus on the elements of form, shape, colour, and texture in creating their artworks, and will have the opportunity to experiment with a range of materials including paint, watercolour, oil pastel, collage and marker.
In the year 5-6 category, students will create a sweet, folk art style, artwork of a Christmas Angel using acrylic paints. They will then continue to build on their acrylic painting skills with a fun and festive gingerbread house painting. These lesson plans will support students in learning about stylised drawing and artworks, and how to create a representational stylised artwork. Students will expand upon their sketching and drawing skills by learning how to complete a sketch from a reference, beginning with basic forms and shapes and adding detail until they are satisfied with their sketch.
Students will also have the chance to practice their compositional skills, as each artwork requires a layout sketch to be completed where students must consider the background, midground, and foreground of the piece as well as the overall effect of the artwork’s composition on the viewer. These lessons focus on the elements of colour, form, shape, and texture, and will allow students to explore with a range of mediums including acrylic paint, watercolour, oil pastel, paint pens, and even glitter glue.
