Have fun with drawing in this colourful K–6 drawing unit. Explore a range of drawing projects using coloured pencil, chalk pastel, oil pastel, paint sticks, scratch art and lead pencil. Create a range of inspiring artworks and learn about famous artists Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky and two contemporary Artists. Each project allows children to experience the thrill of drawing, packed with colour and pattern to fire up the imagination.
Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
Drawing helps kids express ideas and feelings, and to develop fine motor skills. In this drawing unit we draw a curled cat and be inspired by two famous artists Wassily Kaindinsky and Paul Klee. Look at this curled cat chasing the birds! We’ll use bright colours in the guided drawing with lead pencil to draw the outline and oil pastel to colour the lines and shapes. Apply edicol dye or liquid watercolour to complete the background making the colours stand out.
Have fun creating a vibrant dot artwork inspired by Wassily Kandinsky. Each student can draw one large dot and combione them all for a stunning display. Learn about colour and how to create concentric circles in this fun lesson plan. Learn about Paul Klee and draw a work inspired by his Golden Fish artwork. We’ll make our own scratch art and add sea life designs to the border to reveal the colour underneath.
Grade 3 and Grade 4
Experiment with different drawing media from oil pastel to paint sticks and lead pencil in these colourful drawing projects for grades 3 and 4. Your students will have fun with bubbles in this engaging art lesson, blowing bubbles or using a bubble wand and then observing all the colours of the rainbow! We’ll draw the bubbles in oil pastel and add colour to make them pop. There is even an idea for a whole class bubble art display.
Find out about contemporary artist Emma Gale and create a stunning and colourful artwork with our horse drawing project. Use lead pencil to draw the horse on large paper and add colour and pattern with paint sticks and oil pastel. A Horse outline is provided because we know, horses are hard to draw!
Grade 5 and Grade 6
Explore the art of contemporary Canadian artist Eric Abel and create a stunning animal artwork with abstract elements. Our theme is the rainforest with many reference images of rainforest animals to choose from. Use pattern, colour and contrast in this pencil drawing artwork – sure to delight those grade 5 and 6 students that love to get hooked on the detail.
Use chalk pastels to draw an occelated turkey on black paper. Make the colours pop in this amazing bird whose iridescent feathers are something to behold. Use glue to create an outline and then add colour in small lines with chalk pastels to complete the artwork. These projects will assist in skill-building with imaginative exploration, allowing your students to create unique, finished artworks they’ll be excited to share.
