K-2 students will have fun creating some farmyard favourites! We have some sweet texture sheep, fluffy chickens and a pink farmyard pig to create! We will use texture rubbing, drawing techniques, and collage to make the three fun artworks.
The unit covers a range of activities, from a texture scavenger hunt in the classroom with crayons, to observational drawing from reference images of chickens. In the mixed media pig artwork, we’ll use printing, collage and drawing techniques to create the artwork. Students will enjoy finding out about animals on the farm and creating these colourful artworks.
Grade 3 and 4
In the Crumpled Cow artwork we will look at work by artist, Jean Debuffet and be inspired by his naive style. We’ll use oil pastels and edicol dye to create our fun artwork. The border Collie is a fabulous sheepdog known for its intelligence and athletisism. We’ll use clay to make a fun bobble-head sheep dog and paint with acrylics. Students could substitue their own dog by using a photo for this project if desired.
In this unit students will learn about colour, shape, and form. We’ll look at contrasting colours and learn some drawing techniques along with three dimensional modelling to create the clay sheepdog.
Grade 5 and 6
In the farm animals drawing unit for grade 5 and 6, students will learn how to scale up a drawing using the grid method. We have reference images and grids ready to go in the lesson plan to use with your class. Students will practice their observation and drawing skills to create a farm animal drawing from a range of images. They will develop their observational skills as they focus on the details of their chosen subject. Students will learn the importance of tone and will develop drawing, rendering, blending and highlighting techniques to create a beautifully detailed drawing.
Picasso famously painted a colourful rooster. We’ll use oil pastels and acrylic paint to create a colourful artwork inspired by Picasso. They’ll use observation and illustration drawing techniques to begin and then look at choosing a colour palette to continue. Details will be added to create interest and a vibrant colour palette used to give this rooster all the majesty he deserves. They will learn about contrasting and analogous colours along with cool and warm colours in creating this work.
