Owls
Have fun learning about owls, a bird of prey symbolising wisdom and found in nearly every environment on Earth. They are charismatic birds of prey and in folklore, a symbol of wisdom and intuition.
Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2
K-2 students will have fun creating clay owls in either air dry clay or clay to be fired and glazed. There are gorgeous owl lanterns to create with fun features to add or paint some sweet baby owlets on a branch for a cuteness overload. The kids will love creating these!
The unit covers a range of styles from detailed clay owls, patterned with rollers and stamps, to stylized representations using fingerpainting and collage. We’ll us collage techniques to create some fun owl lanterns. Students will enjoy finding out about owls and creating these colourful artworks.
Grade 3 and 4
In the Owl Drawing artwork we will look at work by contemporary artist, Sandra Silberzweig and be inspired by her colourful artwork. We’ll use oil pastels and edicol dyes to create a patterned owl artwork full of colour. The owl painting project is inspired by the traditions of folk art. Kids can create their own patterned sections using a range of colours to create a fun owl painting.
In this unit students will learn about variety and pattern. We’ll look at contrasting and analagous colours and learn some drawing techniques to create the owl shape and features.
Grade 5 and 6
In the anthropomorphic owl painting project, students will be able to draw and create their own owl character. They’ll use observation and illustration drawing techniques to begin and then look at choosing a colour palette to continue. Students will have fun deciding on how to dress their character and painting in the details to complete their work. They will learn about colour and the importance of value as they paint with acrylics.
Students will practice their observation and drawing skills in the charcoal owl project. They will learn techniques for drawing with charcoal to create a range of tones and textures. They will develop their observational skills as they focus on the details of the owl. Students will learn the importance of tone and will develop drawing, rendering, blending and highlighting techniques to create a beautifully detailed drawing.
