Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
Explore the element of texture with new processes and techniques in these exciting K–2 art lessons. Students will create a delicious looking layer cake with textured paint, dripping icing, layer cut sprinkles, and colourful pom poms to add real tactile texture. Kids can choose their own colour scheme and decorations to make every artwork unique and a cake that looks good enough to eat!
Learn about famous Japanese artist, Katsushika Hokusai and his artwork, The Great Wave off Kanagawa from 1830. We’ll create a dynamic artwork with movement and implied texture. We’ll learn about this famous wood block print artist and use line, shape, and pattern to create the appearance of movement and texture.

Grade 3 and Grade 4
Get tactile and use wool to create a textured wool wrap bird with years 3 and 4. We made a beautiful red cardinal, but this lesson plan could be adapted to other birds by using different coloured wool and shape templates.
Collagraph printing is all about texture. Create a raised textured plate and learn about implied texture with this plant themed artwork. We also have a couple of different printing techniques to discover to create different artworks and multiple stunning prints.

Grade 5 and Grade 6
Learn about famous naïve artist Henri Rousseau and create a fun layered clay artwork. Use different textures to create interest in the foliage. This artwork can be made with air dry clay and painted with acrylic paint or made with potters clay and underglazes to fire and then glaze. Kids develop their own composition and develop each individual piece to incorporate.Â
Learn about Surrealism with a birdman artwork inspired by Max Ernst. Use implied texture with drawing and painting techniques. Choose a bird to model the head on – we used an Australian Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo for inspiration. Choose a colour scheme to create this fun artwork inspired by Max Ernst’s collages.
