Line
Investigate the element of line with fun and inspiring projects for Kinder to year 6 art classes. Be inspired by Alexander Calder, Bridget Riley and Joan Miro in this essential art unit.

Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
This Kinder to Year 2 unit introduces students to the element of line through fun, hands-on exploration and creative drawing activities. Inspired by Alexander Calder, students create simple line drawings with bright coloured shapes to explore movement and balance. They then experiment with a range of materials to make different types of lines, such as wavy, zigzag, thick, thin, and textured marks.
There’s a sweet teddy bear jumper design using oil pastels, where students apply their knowledge of line to create bold patterns and an expressive artwork!

Grade 3 and Grade 4
Explores expressive line, pattern, and abstraction through playful and experimental drawing with years 3 and 4. Inspired by Joan Miró, students begin with a Miró line walk, creating movement and imagination through loose, flowing line work. Students add Miró-inspired symbols such as stars, eyes, and abstract forms, building visual storytelling through pattern and repetition.
Draw detailed, Zentangle-style, patterned hands. Add colour using pencil with a limited colour palette to create contrast, variation and a cohesive design.

Grade 5 and Grade 6
In the 5-6 grade category, students will learn about the works of two artists, Alexander Calder and Bridget Riley. These art projects will develop a wire students’ understanding of line through sculpture and optical art.
Inspired by Alexander Calder, students create expressive wire line portraits based on a student photo or provided reference image, focusing on contour, form, and movement in space. We look at the works of contemporary artist, Bridget Riley and explore optical effects through an Op Art line drawing. The artwork focuses on repetition, contrast, and precise line work to create visual vibration and depth.
