Have fun with value with two creative art lessons your students will love! Explore the quirky birds on bags while each child can create their own character illustration. Use colour and mix different values to learn about lighter and darker colours. Add details in different values to decorate the bird and make each character unique!
Create a wonderful, printed bouquet of roses using plant matter and your own simple hand made printing plates. Use acrylic paint to stamp and layer the images and learn about light and dark colours. We look at value, composition, colour and balance as each student creates their own unique artwork.
Grade 3 and Grade 4
Discover the vibrant work of contemporary Dutch artist, Ton Schulten. Schulten creates works with bright blocks of colour and uses value as a major device to create contrast and movement in his landscapes. Students can draw their own individual landscape inspired by his work. Use the artist information sheet to see his work and learn about the artist. Add trees, water, mountains or hills to the composition and use a vibrant colour palette with light and dark values of each colour to make it pop.
Paper weaving is a great low mess, budget friendly, art lesson that builds hand-eye coordination. Kids use math concepts like pattern sequencing and contrasting colours. Different values make individual designs unique and we add drawing details with pens and markers. Weaving encourages concentration, problem-solving, and creative self-expression as kids manipulate strips of paper to create distinct visual designs.

Grade 5 and Grade 6
Painting in the negative is a different way of thinking and creating art! So much learning on value, space and composition and lots of fun! Kids can choose their own theme from sport to food or animals. We create templates on the theme, both positive and negative and apply them over a painted background. Use value to determine the colour scheme with light, dark and contrast being essential to make the subject stand out.Â
Illustrate with chalk pastel and depict a beautiful South American rainforest Macaw. Use value to add light and dark as each colour is applied, creating interest and detail, as the bird comes to life with 3D rendering. Use the included reference images to choose the vibrant Blue and Yellow Macaw or the vibrant Scarlet Macaw to draw.
