Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2
Learn about the Element of Shape with these colourful artworks for Kinder, Year 1 and Year 2 classes. Find out about famous sculptor Alexander Calder and make an organic shape, paper sculpture based on his stabiles. Explore geometric or organic shapes to make a unique sculpture that stands on its own.
Be inspired by Paul Klee, and using shapes, create a vibrant cat and bird drawing and add colour with oil pastels. Try some simple printmaking and have fun with squares and rectangles in our Piet Mondrian inspired printmaking and drawing lesson. Use primary colours to create bold blocks of colour and an abstract artwork to display!
Grade 3 and Grade 4
Explore expressive shapes and abstraction through play and experimenting with years 3 and 4. Discover contemporary US artist, Reggie Laurent and make a fun collage with lids and cut shapes. Use colour and pattern to make the shapes pop and assemble them to make an exciting relief sculpture, or get the whole class involved and make one big stunning artwork together to display!
Be inspired by Paul Klee’s artwork the ‘Red Bridge’, all made from shapes. We’ll create our own simple print blocks, share and use them to print buildings and a bridge on a coloured paper background. We look at colour and composition to create a unique shape artwork.
Grade 5 and Grade 6
Shapes can be geometric and organic, and we’ll use both while learning about radial symmetry in our colourful collage artwork. Students design their own shape mandala, cut all the shapes from painted papers and create patterns. Add details with gemstones and paint pens to complete these gorgeous colourful works!Â
Illustration is a fun way to practice drawing organic shapes. We’ll draw and create a folded landscape with three layers of focus; foreground, midground and background. Choose the theme for your folded landscape; forest, reef or mountain and design each layer. Draw shapes to create the objects and life forms to include and then add colour with watercolour and coloured pencil to complete this unique artwork.
